Black Fox Camp Spring Marker

The Black Fox Spring Marker is a free-standing marker dedicated on June 18, 1995 and sponsored by the Rutherford County Historical Society. The marker recognizes Native American lore and describes the story of Cherokee Chief Black Fox and the Ore Expedition led by Major James Ore. The tale recounts the violent clash between Black Fox and Ore that took place on September 7, 1794. Dispatched by Governor William Blount, Ore and his men devastated the Native American villages along the Tennessee River and 70 warriors were slain. It is said that to escape capture from Ore, Black Fox leapt into Murfree spring and emerged further downstream. The Black Fox Camp Spring marker notes that this site was also significant as one of the earliest sites settled in Rutherford County and as a resting stop for Native Americans during the Trail of Tears.
