William Lytle Marker

The William Lytle marker exists as a free-standing historical commemoration located in West Murfreesboro on Broad Street. William Lytle served as a captain during the American Revolution. For his military service, Lytle was awarded land that became the frontier town of Murfreesboro. Sponsored by the Tennessee Historical Commission in 1953, the marker was dedicated by the Highway State Department on April 14, 1954. His former house existed near this marker, and his burial place lies nearby in the Lytle Family Cemetery. Beginning in January of 1965, residents, unaware of the already existence of the marker, called for a marker to be placed by the family cemetery. This desire was caused by a report given by the Murfreesboro Rotary Club in their journal that brought to light the neglect of the Lytle Family burial site. The marker dedicated in 1954 was moved to the corner of Carnation Lane and Broad street near the site. In 1977, the Tennessee Historical Commission approved of a new replacement for the marker.
