"Bethel Marker"

The Bethel marker is located in 4286 Sulphur Springs Road, Murfreesboro, TN. Evangelist Ebeneezer Macgowan (February 17, 1767- April 30, 1850) was an early Tennessee resident who donated land for a meeting house, which later came to be known as “Bethel.” Macgowan was a British native who migrated to Virginia, and later settled in Middle Tennessee near Bethel's current location. The present structure was constructed in 1887, and Reverand Macgowan was buried nearby. 1,500 people attended the June 1887 dedication ceremony. Bethel is associated today with a community cemetery and, until 1970, with a local school. The Bethel historical marker was sponsored by Robert Bates.
