In recent history, monuments have been a flash point in southern communities. Through this project we hope to give the community a new perspective on their monuments and historic markers. As of right now, there is no formal documentation of Murfreesboro’s commemorative landscape. Through this project, we will document the city’s monuments and create tours to shed light on local histories, setting a foundation for future researchers. Through this documentation, we hope to bridge the past and present, helping the community and researchers alike realize that history is happening right now.
This project is a history of commemorative landscapes in Murfreesboro. It is not a comprehensive study of all monuments and forms of commemoration in Murfreesboro as we excluded cemeteries and Middle Tennessee State University campus.
